What the fact-checkers found
The claims in the report are nonsense. Lady Gaga has made no such announcement. She is not moving to Utica. Nor is she moving to St. Petersburg, Florida as claimed in an alternative version of the same fake report. The reports come from a network of clickbait fake-news websites that, between them, churn out an ongoing stream of fictional stories about celebrities supposedly moving to unexpected locations.
According to a ‘news’ report that is currently traversing the interwebs at speed, pop icon, Lady Gaga is moving to Utica, New York. Supposedly, the star made the announcement during a recent interview in which she claimed that she was tired of the L.A. lifestyle and was looking for a change. The report has at least a few Gaga fans all agog.
But, in fact, the report is utter nonsense. Lady Gaga has not announced any plans to move to Utica. The report comes from a fake-news website called Local News 33. The site includes the following disclaimer on its About page:
Local News 33 is a fantasy news site. All news articles on localnews33.com are satire or pure fantasy.
‘Local News 33’ is just one among a growing network of almost identical websites that publish alternative versions of the same fictional articles. All the sites include the same ‘fantasy news’ disclaimer.
Another of these ‘news’ sites carries a report identical to the one above except that ‘St. Petersburg, Florida’ replaces ‘Utica, New York’. And, this network of fake-news sites host multiple versions of reports claiming that various stars – including Justin Bieber, Tom Cruise, and Clint Eastwood – have announced that they are moving to unexpected locations.
In fact, more and more of these ‘celebrity moving’ hoax reports are appearing. And, because the fictional reports are presented as news and the ‘fantasy’ disclaimer is hidden away under the ‘About’ menu, many fans are apt to believe and share the claims. Be wary of any report that claims that a celebrity has announced unexpectedly that he or she is moving to an out of the way location to escape his or her current lifestyle. If the announcement is true, you should be able to easily verify it by searching a news aggregator service such as Google News or by checking the celebrity’s social media feeds and official fan pages.
